On Monday December 19, I attended the launch of the annual concert Rebel Salute organized by Tony Rebel. This is the 24th staging of the concert. The launch was scheduled to start at 7.00 pm but didn’t get underway until 45 minutes later.
The launch comprised a variety of speakers such as Paul Pennicook, Director of Tourism, Jamaica Tourist Board, various sponsors and musical performances by Rockaz Element, Chevaughn, Queen Ifrica all of whom will be appearing on the show which is scheduled for January 13-14, 2017.
On the programme it said that the guest speaker was going to be the legendary Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records. His presentation came in the form of a question and answer session with Cordell Green, Broadcast Commission chairman and Christopher Barnes. The floor was also opened to allow questions from the audience. Mr. Blackwell shared some of his expriences in the business like producing Millie Small’s 1960s international hit “My boy lollipop”. He also said that he likes Chronixx.
Tony Rebel came on and shared with the audience the artiste line up which included Tarrus Riley, Kimani Marley, Half Pint, Nomadzz, Queen Ifrica, Jesse Royal among others. At the end of his presentation, Tony Rebel performed three songs ending with his hit “Jah is standing by my side” which ended the night’s proceedings.
