For the first time since the inception of the annual song festival competition in 1966, there will be none this year. Bearing that in mind, I would like to share some facts about my favourite festival song.
Cherry Oh Baby won the 1971 festival song competition.
- The singer and songwriter of the song Eric Donaldson as a seventeen year old in 1964 recorded tracks for Studio One which were never released.
- Eric Donaldson went on to win the competition 5 more times in 1977, 1978, 1984, 1993 and 1997.
- “Cherry Oh Baby” is the most covered festival song have been done so over 30 times, Eric Donaldson himself having recorded an update.
- The most well know covers are by the Rolling Stones on their 1976 album, Black and Blue and UB40 on their 1983 album. UB40 released it as a single and it hit number 12 on the UK charts.
5.Tony Rebel sampled “Cherry Oh Baby” in his song “Sweet Jamaica” from his 1992 Columbia Records album “Vibes of the Times”.
